SPENCER CARPENTER,
son of Joseph C. and Mahala Carpenter, was born in Megs Co. O. in March
1844. Went out in the spring of 1862 in Co. G, 77th O.V.I. Had two or
three months sickness with camp disease soon after going out, but good
health since. Present at most of the regimental actions without wounds
or capture. Re-enlisted with the regiment and is still with it in Texas,
awaiting discharge as a veteran.
WILLIAM H. CHRISTOPHER,
son of Barnett and Eliza J. Christopher, was born in Fayette Co. Penn.
Dec. 25, 1845. Went out as a recruit in Co. D, 77th O.V.I. at the
re-enlistment of that regiment. Has not been off duty on account of
sickness, except six weeks with measles and mumps at Little Rock, Ark.
Never wounded, or prisoner, and is still (at time of writing) with the
regiment in Texas.
CHARLES COCHRAN,
son of Isaac and Sarah Cochran, was born in Columbiana Co. O. May 3,
1840. Enlisted Oct. 16, 1862, in Co. D and was transferred to Co. H,
77th O.V.I. During his first two years he suffered much from sickness,
having had the small-pox at Helena Ark. Was never wounded or a
prisoner. With health improved, he is still with his regiment in Texas.
JAMES HAWKINS,
son of John and Mary Hawkins, was born about 1825. Enlisted from Warren
in Co. H, 77th O.V.I. in the spring of 1862, soon after the battle of
Shiloh. While in the regiment he was taken with the small-pox and died.
JAMES LIGHTFOOT
[Lightfritz], son of John and Susanna Lightfoot [Lightfritz] was born
in Warren Tp. April 29, 1842. Went out in Co. D, 77th O.V.I. at the
re-enlistment of that Regiment. Has never been sick or wounded. Was
captured in the summer of 1864, and in prison at Camp Ford, Texas, ten
months. Rejoined the regiment when exchanged, and is still in service.
HENRY PERDEW,
son of William and Susanna Perdew, was born in Warren about 1831.
Enlisted from there in Co. H, 77th O.V.I. immediately after the battle
of Shiloh in April 1862, and was mustered in at Camp Dennison. While the
regiment was at Alton, he was taken with small-pox; partially
recovered, relapsed and died in 1863, and was buried by his comrades at
Alton Ill. Married and had three children.
SIMON J. READING,
son of John and Margaret Reading, was born in Monmouthshire Eng. Oct.
1, 1838. Went out in the fall of 1861 in Co. K, 77th O.V.I. He was
lying sick at the time of the battle of Shiloh with lung disease. At the
retreat, he was placed in an army wagon, carried a short distance and
put out to make room for the wounded. He lay all night under the
riverbank, without covering, and died from the effects of exposure about
two weeks after, April 24, 1862, and was buried near Shiloh Church.
JOHN T. SHEID
[Shed], son of Henry G. and Martha E. Sheid [Shed], was born in Warren
June 14, 1847. Went out Feb. 24, 1864, in Co. F, 77th O.V.I. Had
measles soon after going out and was in hospital two months at Little
Rock. Was accidently wounded at that place. While attempting to arrest
